Oh, *fun*...
I've put in a couple french drains myself ($DAYJOB is nominally
construction, but frequently handyman/repairs).
A "french drain" is the technical name for the ditch full of gravel
you're after (though the term also applies to a hole full of gravel).
But I live on the other side of the country (Northern California).
