[Toybox] [PATCHES] cleanup passes on cut.

Coming back to this.

Split up into multiple commits for easier understanding. The first four
should have no behavioral changes; the last one does.

I'd like to add tests for the patch 5 changes, but I don't see a way to
test for something that's supposed to error.
