FYI, gcc isn't a perl script in Ubuntu 11.04:

$ which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc
$ file /usr/bin/gcc
/usr/bin/gcc: symbolic link to `gcc-4.5'
$ file /usr/bin/gcc-4.5
/usr/bin/gcc-4.5: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV),
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, stripped
